How we developed our 'reading benefits slider'

Why read slider explained

As we developed Pageticker, we were astounded by the amount of research that has linked reading with a myriad of different benefits, from academic to mental health, creativity, better sleep and future success.


We decided that an interactive slider would be a really cool way to illustrate these benefits. The slider does come with a cautionary warning though: whilst these correlations are positive and generally fairly strong, they are indicative rather than predictive, and any correlation does not always suggest causation. The slider does not come with a guarantee! That said, the researchers behind these papers have almost universally come up with very strong arguments that support causation, which we have also tried to set out below.


The slider draws relationships between minutes read per week and three things: vocabulary acquisition, academic success, and self-esteem. We’ll look at each of these things in turn.


The link between minutes read per week and vocabulary acquisition


Many papers have been written that draw links between reading volume and vocabulary acquisition, but more often than not they work from the following basic premise:


Words Learned Per Year = (Total Words Read) x (% of Unfamiliar Words)


The average child in their primary years expands their vocabulary by roughly 3,000 to 4,000 new words annually, but the variance in this is huge. Exposure to new words comes from many different sources, but it is universally accepted that reading plays a more important role than anything else when it comes to vocabulary acquisition*.


The baseline we have used is 2,000 New Words via 500,000 Words Read. A detailed simulation study investigating word learning mechanics published in Reading Research Quarterly mapped out text complexity for sixth graders in the US. Within standard children's literature, a child encounters roughly 1,000 unique word types above their grade level for every few books read. The study established an explicit link that a student must read approximately 500,000 words of text per year to naturally and incidentally learn 2,000 of those advanced words.

This is supported by The Nagy & Herman Model: In their foundational research, Nagy, Herman, and Anderson tracked exactly how many words stick after a single encounter in text. They proved that children have a 5% to 15% chance of learning a word completely from a single context exposure. When a child reads at the 50th percentile (about 600,000 words a year), they encounter thousands of unknown words. At a conservative 5% success rate, this volume explicitly accounts for an acquisition of 2,250 to 3,000 new words per year. This mathematically explains why children who read independently easily reach the standard annual growth milestone of 3,000+ words, while children who do not read fail to hit it.


Here are additional studies which support this model:


*The second biggest driver of vocabulary acquisition has been demonstrated to be direct instruction in a classroom setting, but it is estimated that children only learn 300-500 words this way per year.



The link between minutes read per week and the chances of academic success.


As with vocabulary acquisition, the volume of academic literature that supports this link is almost overwhelming. The most significant and certainly the largest scale of these studies is likely to be the that by the OECD in 2002, which analysed PISA data and concluded that student reading engagement was the biggest predictor of academic achievement, even more so than socio-economic class (In fact, students with the lowest socioeconomic background but high reading engagement scored significantly better than students with the highest socioeconomic background but low reading engagement.)


How do we come up with the specific figures for the slider? For this, our baseline was 15 minutes of reading per day. This is slightly more than average for a child (and children are reading less and less) but this seems to be the “magic number” at which students start seeing substantial positive gains in reading achievement. This is explained excellently by Renaissance Learning.


Specifically to our slider, we are considering academic success across English, mathematics and science, based on the reasoning that studies universally demonstrate that reading is strongly correlated to success in each of these disciplines. The most significant study in this regard was conducted by UCL in conjunction with the University of Malaga and sampled 43,000 students aged between 10 and 14, and it’s from here that we drew our wider data.


The slider is based on successfully achieving expected levels in all three of these disciplines.


The link between minutes read per week and self-esteem


Whilst not as prolific as the previous, there are still numerous studies linking self-esteem to reading. However, there are caveats to the research here. The standard measure of self-esteem - the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale - is a 10-item, 4-point Likert scale yielding a score from 0 to 30. However, it evaluates global self-esteem (an abstract, overall sense of self-worth) and was originally designed for adolescents and adults.


When researchers study primary-aged children (especially those under 11), they run into two issues:


  1. Cognitive Confusion: The RSES contains five reverse-scored, negatively worded items (e.g., "At times I think I am no good at all"). Studies show young children often get confused by the negative phrasing, which inadvertently tests their reading comprehension rather than their self-esteem.

  2. Domain-Specific Self-Worth: Primary school children do not typically view self-esteem globally. Instead, their self-worth is highly segmented into specific domains: academic competence, athletic ability, physical appearance, and peer acceptance.


Because of this, researchers' correlation studies generally take two paths: they modify the Rosenberg scale, or deploy domain-specific tools like the Harter Self-Perception Profile for Children (SPPC).


Despite this, direct links between reading habits and self-esteem metrics emerge across several major studies.


For example, when paired with reading diaries, researchers found that children with high independent reading volume and higher reading ability scored significantly higher on the modified Rosenberg scale*. This provided the benchmarks for our slider.


High reading volume correlates with strong academic performance. Because primary school environments place immense social capital on this, children who read heavily build a core identity of competence, directly driving up their global self-worth score.


What exacerbates the problem is the reading-self-esteem loop. Children with low print exposure and reading delays consistently score significantly lower on general, academic, and peer-related self-esteem scales. This leads to a socio-emotional Matthew Effect, whereby children who do not read feel left behind by peers, causing anxiety during reading tasks. This anxiety leads them to avoid reading, which tanks both their reading volume and their self-esteem. Conversely, high-volume readers experience continuous validation, protecting their self-esteem.

Conclusions


As we outlined at the beginning of this article, our slider is principally designed to be indicative, and whilst we have worked hard to validate our numbers (indeed much have been pulled directly from research papers), it hasn’t been subjected to peer review. This we would welcome, although whilst that process may offer some refinement to the model, the correlations, and the strong arguments as to causality, would remain.
