Reading fluency is the ability to read expressively (prosody) with accuracy and at a good pace.
Fluent readers can focus on what the text means, rather than spending time decoding each word.
Here is a breakdown of the skills that make up reading fluency:
Accuracy
Reading accuracy is the ability to read words correctly. Fluent readers can identify words without making frequent errors, which allows them to focus on understanding the text rather than decoding individual words.
Reading Rate
Reading rate is the speed that the reader reads, sometimes measured in terms of words per minute. A fluent reader reads at a pace that is appropriate for the text that they are reading, not too fast and not too slowly.
Reading Expression (prosody)
Reading expression or prosody as it's sometimes called, means reading with expression, using appropriate intonation. It helps to show meaning and emotion in the text.

Pageticker and Reading Fluency
On Pageticker, our digital reading record, parents and teachers can choose to record reading fluency metrics if they wish (but they don't have to).
We have four reading fluency categories that can be recorded - accuracy, reading rate, reading expression and comprehension.
We support parents to understand what is meant by each of these terms. There is a scale that they can use and a definition for each rating.
This is something that is optional but we have found helps parents to understand what is meant by reading fluency.
