If you are a teacher looking for some creative ways to celebrate World Book Day at your school, this is the article for you. It includes some free/ low cost ideas, as well as more traditional World Book Day activities.
1) Dress your Door Competition
Ask each class teacher to decorate their classroom door, themed around a favourite class book or a book that they haven't come across yet. It could include quotes from the book, characters, or interesting facts. This will hopefully encourage discussions about the books when they come through the door.
2) Create a story scene
Using shoeboxes and Design and Technology materials, encourage pupils to create a 3D scene from a book of their choosing. On the last day of the week, hold an exhibition and invite other children or parents to chat to the children about their designs.
3) Arrange a Book Tasting/ Mystery Book Activity
Set up your classroom like a restaurant, with menus with books from different genres. Or wrap up some books and write a blurb on the outside. Encourage children to read the blurb and choose the book that they would like to read.
4) Arrange a Cross Curricular Day
Think about a book that you can use across the school and how you could link to other subjects. One school turned their school into a chocolate factory and celebrated the work of Roald Dahl. In maths they measured ingredients and then made chocolate crispies and in science they measured the carbon dioxide in lemonade.
5) Join a free online event or arrange an author visit
The National Literacy Trust will be running a football and book quiz. Or if you are lucky enough to have the budget, think about organising an author visit.
Whatever you decide to do on World Book Day, remember that books should be the central focus, so reading aloud and sharing books that are loved is the most important part of the day.
