Hi Everyone,

This week you can find out about our latest feature on the Teacher Dashboard - 'Book Recommendations'. We also have our new reads spotlighting 'Refugee' (a graphic novel) and 'This Book Will Make You a Scientist', plus your usual resources, the spring reading list, toolkit, and key May/June dates for the National Year of Reading.

Happy reading,

Book a Demo

If you’d like to see Pageticker in action, you can book a short demo. In 20–30 minutes, we’ll walk you through how teachers track reading at home and in class, how families use the free app, and what the data looks like for reading leads and SLT. It’s also a chance for you to ask questions.

Pageticker Resources

Our new Pageticker bookmarks are a simple, low-cost way to boost reading buzz in your classroom, whether or not you’re using Pageticker.

Each pack includes 35 colourful bookmarks for just £5 with free P&P, ideal for celebrating reading milestones, rewarding effort, or sending home as a reminder to read. They’ve been designed to stand alone as a fun, flexible incentive for every reader in your class or year group, while also pairing neatly with Pageticker if you choose to use it.

Handpicked Suggestion

Our weekly handpicked suggestion is Refugee: The Graphic Novel by Alan Gratz and Syd Fini.

This is suitable for older children due to the themes of war and Holocaust, so we would mainly recommend it for children aged 11+. We’d also recommend pre-reading it to use your own judgement, as you might find it more suitable for secondary school pupils.

It follows three children, living through different wars at different times.

Josef is Jewish and living in the 1930s in Nazi Germany. With the Nazis closing in, Josef and his family flee onto a ship, with a dangerous ocean in front of them.

Isabel is a Cuban girl living in 1994. As riots rage around her, she escapes on a raft, risking everything for freedom.

Mahmoud is a Syrian boy living in 2015. War is tearing his home apart, so he begins a brutal journey across continents to try to find refuge.

Even though they’re separated by time and place, their paths are bound by fear, courage and hope.

A very moving graphic novel, which will help children to understand the lives of children living through war.

Notable New Release

The notable release for this week is This Book Will Make You A Scientist, which is written by Dr Sheila Shani and illustrated by Ellen Surrey. It’s suitable for children aged 7+.

Discover 25 groundbreaking scientists in a book filled with experiments children can try out at home, too!

Measure the speed of light like Albert Einstein. Train for space like Mae Jemison. Communicate with chimpanzees like Jane Goodall. Make a volcano erupt. Extract DNA from a strawberry. Spark electricity. Explore evolution. Test gravity.

Packed with fascinating facts and step-by-step activities, this action-filled guide is a child’s guide to thinking, experimenting, and discovering like a real scientist.

There’s also another book in the series, This Book Will Make You An Artist, which is written by Ruth Millington and illustrated by Ellen Surrey.

Pageticker Spotlight - ‘Book Recommendations’

We're excited to share this new feature that lets children make book recommendations!

These can be viewed by logging into the Teacher Dashboard, where there's now a new 'Recommended Books' tile, enabling teachers to view all recommended books at either class or school level.

Any book recommendations made will also appear in the activity feed. In addition, teachers can also see whether a book was recommended to the class by going to the 'Book Reviews' tab within the child's profile and viewing logs.
